Breaking Down the Roster Moves

The Dolphins' roster moves to get down to the 53-player limit Saturday hardly could be considered eye-opening, but there were some interesting developments nonetheless. We break down the cuts by position.

QUARTERBACK

Cut Saturday: Aaron Corp (waived-injured)

On the 53-man roster: Ryan Tannehill, Matt Moore, Pat Devlin

Breakdown: The only question here was whether the Dolphins would keep a third quarterback, and apparently Devlin did enough to convince them to do just that. We might never know for sure, but it's possible Devlin saved his spot on the roster with his late-game heroics Thursday night.

RUNNING BACK

Cut Saturday: Jonas Gray

On the 53-man roster: Lamar Miller, Daniel Thomas, Mike Gillislee, Marcus Thigpen, Evan Rodriguez (FB)

Breakdown: Nothing surprising here. Gray just fizzled after a strong start to the preseason and didn't appear to have much of a shot. The only intrigue here was whether the Dolphins would decide to go without a single fullback on the roster.

WIDE RECEIVER

Cut Saturday: Chad Bumphis, Marvin McNutt, Brian Tyms, Keenan Davis

On the 53-man roster: Brian Hartline, Mike Wallace, Brandon Gibson, Rishard Matthews

Breakdown: This was one position to produce a little bit of a surprise, if only because the Dolphins decided to keep only four wide receivers on their initial 53-man roster. Of course, don't forget that Thigpen could play here in a pinch and the Dolphins also could add somebody Sunday or Monday. A good guess is that one or two of the released players will wind up on the practice squad.

TIGHT END

Cut Saturday: Kyle Miller

On the 53-man roster: Charles Clay, Dion Sims, Michael Egnew

Breakdown: No surprise here, either. Miller seemed like he had a good shot at making the team heading into camp but he really got hurt by the injury he sustained in the Hall of Fame Game.

OFFENSIVE LINE

Cut Saturday: Jeff Adams (waived-injured), Sam Brenner, Chris Barker

On the 53-man roster: Jonathan Martin, Richie Incognito, Mike Pouncey, John Jerry, Tyson Clabo, Josh Samuda, Nate Garner, Dallas Thomas, Will Yeatman

Breakdown: Once Lance Louis' contract was terminated last week, this became pretty much a slam dunk, both in terms of the number kept and the players kept.

DEFENSIVE LINE

Cut Saturday: Antwaun Applewhite, A.J. Francis, Tristan Okpalaugo, Kheeston Randall, Tracy Robertson

On the 53-man roster: Cameron Wake, Olivier Vernon, Jared Odrick, Paul Soliai, Randy Starks, Derrick Shelby, Dion Jordan, Vaughn Martin

Breakdown: Francis and Okpalaugo played well in the preseason to earn roster spots, but they seemed to be facing very long odds regardless because of the Dolphins' depth at the position. The one surprise here is Randall, who showed some good things both last season and this preseason. He's not practice-squad eligible, but Francis and Okpalaugo are.

LINEBACKER

Cut Saturday: Austin Spitler, Lee Robinson

On the 53-man roster: Koa Misi, Philip Wheeler, Dannell Ellerbe, Jason Trusnik, Jelani Jenkins, Jonathan Freeny, Josh Kaddu

Breakdown: We've said for a while this was going to be a tough decision among the backups, and maybe the toughest cut was not Spitler but Robinson, who looked very good in coverage throughout the preseason.

DEFENSIVE BACK

Cut Saturday: Keelan Johnson, Jordan Kovacs, Julian Posey, De'Andre Presley

On the 53-man roster: Brent Grimes, Dimitri Patterson, Reshad Jones, Chris Clemons, Jamar Taylor, Will Davis, Jimmy Wilson, Kelcie McCray, R.J. Stanford, Nolan Carroll, Don Jones

Breakdown: This one was interesting because 11 is an unusually high number of defensive backs to have on the roster. In fact, we would expect one of the 11 kept to be gone before too long. The two who appear most vulnerable would be Don Jones and Stanford, although Stanford has special teams value.

SPECIALISTS

Cut Saturday: None

On the 53-man roster: Brandon Fields, Caleb Sturgis, John Denney

Breakdown: Nothing to discuss here. This was set the second Dan Carpenter's contract was terminated.
