Roth Activated
LB Matt Roth
LB Matt Roth

Matt Roth finally is back on the active roster. The fifth-year linebacker was activated from the Non-Football Injury list on Saturday, in time to play in the game against the Jets if Coach Tony Sparano chooses to use him.

To make room for Roth, the Dolphins released rookie tight end John Nalbone, who really had been a non-factor all season.

Nalbone was a fifth-round pick of the Dolphins this April, and one would expect him to be signed to the practice squad if he clears waivers.

As for Roth, Sparano was consistent all week in saying, "We'll see," when it came to questions about Roth's status, so there's really no way of knowing whether he'll play against the Jets.

Roth practiced every day this week after being limited to one practice the previous week after he sustained a minor ankle injury.

If he does play, Roth figures to be on a play count because he's likely not yet in "football shape," but it's also clear Roth could help the Dolphins stop the Jets' top-ranked running game.

The addition of Roth gives the Dolphins 11 linebackers on the active roster, and that's an enormous numbers -- even for a team that plays a 3-4 defense.

It's safe to assume the Dolphins will be making a roster move soon at the position, and it's not inconceivable that Nalbone could be re-signed at that time because there are now only two tight ends -- Anthony Fasano and Joey Haynos -- on the roster at this time.
