Maybe the injury that kept linebacker Channing Crowder out of Sunday's game at Kansas City is more of a problem than originally. That would be one explanation why the Dolphins on Tuesday signed veteran linebacker Derek Smith. To make room on the roster, they waived wide receiver Chris Hannon.

A 12-year veteran, Smith played five games with San Diego this season before being released on Nov. 12. He had 35 tackles in those five games, which included four starts at inside linebacker in the Chargers' 3-4 defense.

Smith joined the Chargers as a free agent this offseason after spending four seasons with Washington and seven more with San Francisco.

A former third-round pick of the Redskins in 1997, Smith had his most productive NFL season in 2003 with San Francisco when he recorded a career-high 189 tackles with 3.5 sacks.

As for Hannon, he was inactive for all three games he was on the active roster.
