Hilliard a Versatile Back

Posted Apr 27, 2008

The Dolphins went for a second running back in the sixth round when they tabbed Montana's Lex Hilliard with the 204th overall pick. But unlike Jalen Parmele, Hilliard has the advantage of being big enough to line up at fullback.

In fact, versatility might be the thing to like about Hilliard, who stands 5-11, 230 pounds.

He scored 50 rushing touchdowns during his career at Montana, and bounced back from a torn Achilles tendon that cost him the 2006 season to rush for more than 1,100 yards in '07.

Hilliard is another back with special teams ability, which will help his cause in trying to make the roster.

One comparison that has been made with Hilliard is with former Rutgers star Brian Leonard, who blocked for Rice in his senior year in college and wound up getting drafted in the second round last year. Another comparison was to Dallas running back Marion Barber III.

Hilliard will compete with Parmele, as well as Patrick Cobbs, for the chance to back up Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams, although Hilliard's versatility might convince to keep him instead of one or both of the fullbacks, Reagan Mauia and Boomer Grigsby.
