Robert Baker thought he was on his way to work out for the Denver Broncos when he got a phone call from his agent on Monday. Instead, he got the news that the Dolphins were looking to re-sign him.For Baker, a native of Gainesville, Fla., it was certainly welcome news.

"My agent asked, am I ready to play? AM I READY? I’ve been playing football since I was 9 years old. I was born ready to play football," said Baker, who was signed after Albert Johnson was placed on injured reserve because of a torn ACL he sustained in the loss to Kansas City.

Baker certainly is no stranger to the Dolphins, having attended training camp each of the last three summers. But the only time Baker was signed to the active roster was for last year's playoff game against Baltimore, and he did not play in that game.

It's not likely Baker will dress this Sunday when the Dolphins face New England, but he figures to handle the kick returning duties starting with the Oct. 13 game at Denver.

In addition to Denver, Baker said his agent also had conversations with the Jacksonville Jaguars. But Baker made it clear the Dolphins are the team he wanted to play for.

"Ever since I was little I wanted to play for Miami," said Baker, who got a big hug from Dolphins strength and conditioning coach John Gamble in the locker room Wednesday. "I love this team, I love the players. It’s a good situation."

As we predicted Monday, the Dolphins made a switch on their practice squad, signing guard Antwan Kirk-Hughes, a rookie free agent from Texas.

To make room for Kirk-Hughes, the Dolphins released linebacker Joshua Symonette from the practice squad.

The addition of Kirk-Hughes means the Dolphins now have three offensive linemen on their five-man practice squad, the other two being Dwayne Pierce and Troy Andrew. The other two members of the practice squad are 2002 draft picks Leonard Henry and Sam Simmons.
