Dolphins Waive Nine

Defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson once looked like a promising prospect for the Dolphins, but that's apparently no longer the case because the former seventh-round pick was among nine players waived on Monday. The moves brought the Dolphins to 76 players, leaving them one over the roster limit they must reach by 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Along with Vickerson, the other players waived were punter Ryan Flinn, kicker Matt Prater, wide receiver David Sutton, tight end Jason Rader, running back Ray Perkins, safety Christopher Vedder, cornerback Shirdonya Mitchell and safety Chris Harrell.

None of the moves should be considered that surprising,

The release of Flinn and Prater leaves the Dolphins with only one kicker and one punter on the roster, kicker Jay Feely and punter Brandon Fields.

Prater didn't have a chance against Feely because Feely is an established veteran, while the fact Fields was a seventh-round pick this year left Flinn with little chance to make the team.

In fact, he didn't get the chance to punt in the preseason until the second half of Saturday night's game against Tampa Bay.

As for Vickerson, after missing his entire rookie season because of a knee injury sustained in the preseason, he looked good at times in training camp last year but then was inactive for all 16 regular season games in 2006.
