Coach Dave Wannstedt said Burnett experienced some swelling and would have to undergo athroscopic surgery.
The Dolphins will fill Burnett's roster spot, but the question is when that will get done.
There's a possibility this could be the end of the line for Burnett, who first entered the NFL with the old Cleveland Browns back in 1990.
Burnett has won a Super Bowl title — with the Baltimore Ravens in the 2000 season — and he indicated earlier this season he probably would retire after the season.
In other news:
-- Quarterback Jay Fiedler continues to be limited in practice and there's no guarantee he'll be able to play Monday night against the Eagles.
If he can't go, of course, his place would be taken by backup Brian Griese.
-- It looks like defensive tackle Tim Bowens will be back in the lineup after missing the New England game because of a calf injury.
