Garner Getting a Shot

The Dolphins continue to find a permanent solution at right guard, and it's versatile veteran Nate Garner who's getting a look now. Garner replaced Josh Samuda during the Dolphins' fourth offensive possession Friday night after Samuda struggled.

Even though there were no team drills during practice Sunday, it was Garner who was at right guard with the first-team offensive line whenever it lined up together.

Coach Joe Philbin was asked what Garner needed to do to make himself a contender for the starting job.

"He is a contender right now," Philbin replied. "He's got a lot of snaps in. We know a lot about him. He's very versatile. He fills a lot of roles, at times we've been competing. Again, our philosophy is we are going to find the five best guys and line them up get them ready to go. Right now, we aren't exactly sure who those five guys are, so he's absolutely in the competition at this time."

Garner first joined the Dolphins in 2008 after being claimed off waivers from the New York Jets, making him the longest-tenured member of the offensive line.

Garner has started 13 games for the Dolphins, including four at right tackle last season after Jake Long was injured and Jonathan Martin was switched to left tackle.

In addition, Garner started eight games at guard in 2009 and another one in 2011.

The competition at right guard was expected to be disputed between incumbent John Jerry and free agent pick-up Lance Louis, but Jerry has been out for a couple of weeks and Louis is still trying to work his way back from the knee injury he sustained last November as a member of the Chicago Bears.
