Binns, who reports indicate sustained a torn ACL and MCL in practice Sunday, and Collins (injury unknown) both will revert to injured reserve if they clear waivers — that's the likely scenario — unless player and team reach an injury settlement.
Given the severity of Binns' injury, it's likely he'll spend the whole season on IR.
As for the two new wide receivers, well, one isn't so new anymore.
That would be Pruitt, who played nine games for the Dolphins in 2011 before being caught last August.
Pruitt was a raw prospect from the time he first came to the Dolphins, but he's certainly got physical skills. He's got a nice size/speed combination, and also has special teams experience.
That's how he got on the field in 2011 when he didn't catch a pass but contributed as a gunner.
Of the two newcomers, he's easily the one with the best chance to stick.
As for Davis, he recently was cut by the Cleveland Browns after a disappointing career at the University of Iowa.
Sure, Davis ended up as the 14th-leading receiver in school history, but much more was expected of him after he arrived at Iowa as a four-star recruit.
Ironically, Davis was forced to play a supporting role at Iowa until his senior year because of the presence of one Marvin McNutt, the same Marvin McNutt who is making a strong push for a roster spot with the Dolphins at the moment.
Davis has impressive size as well (6-2, 215) and the ability to play the slot, but he'll have to find a way to distinguish himself among a group of young wide receivers with similar skill sets.
As constituted now, the group of wide receivers behind the top three of Brian Hartline, Mike Wallace and Brandon Gibson is pretty much all tall receivers with the exception of 5-foot-10 Chad Bumphis.
As for the other receivers worked out on Tuesday, one can only assume that Austin Collie and Laurent Robinson still represent too much of a medical risk based on their recent concussion issues.
It's fair to wonder whether either receiver — both have a lot of ability — will ever play in the NFL again.
