Pouncey Deflects Cap Flap

Dolphins center Mike Pouncey addressed reporters after the first practice of training camp Sunday morning, but he wanted no part of any discussion dealing with the controversy that arose after he and his twin brother Maurkice were photographed wearing caps that said, "FREE HERNANDEZ."

The caps were worn as a show of support for former University of Florida teammate Aaron Hernandez, who currently is in jail in Massachusetts facing murder charges.

The Pouncey twins wore the hats last weekend at a party to celebrate their upcoming 24th birthday on July 24. On Monday, Maurkice Pouncey apologized on Twitter, writing, "I fully recognize the seriousness of the situation involving my former teammate, and I regret that my actions appear to make light of that serious situation. I apologize to anyone who was offended by my actions."

After two questions relating to the first day of camp and the large crowd at the Dolphins facility, Mike Pouncey was asked Sunday if he wanted to comment on the wearing of the caps.

"I'm just here to focus on football," Pouncey replied. "It's training camp right now, so we're just here to focus all on football."

Pouncey then was asked about Maurkice apologizing and why he hadn't felt the need to do the same.

"We're all football right now," Pouncey said. "You need football questions, I'm willing to answer."

Then Pouncey was asked whether he would address the controversy at any point.

"Once we get through football," Pouncey said

Without getting into specifics about his situation, a reporter asked Pouncey if he thinks athletes are being scrutinized too much these days over what they do off the field.

"I think it's all necessary," Pouncey replied. "We get paid a lot of money to act a certain way and that's the way we should be acting."
