Jets officially release Tim Tebow

Follow a season of discontent, the New York Jets parted ways with their seldom-used Wildcat quarterback. With five quarterbacks still lining the depth chart, Tebow became the odd man out for Gang Green.

The move had been rumored since the beginning of the offseason period, and the New York Jets made it official on Monday waiving backup quarterback Tim Tebow. Starved for playing time, but no stranger to media attention, Tebow made more headlines than he took snaps in 2012 for the Jets. After drafting West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith in the second round on Saturday, Gang Green formally put an end to the Tebow era in New York. Tebow amassed 39 passing yards and 102 rushing yards last season, playing in just seven percent of the team's offensive snaps.

Tebow's release was a long time coming as the coaching staff never carved out a role for the unconventional quarterback. With so much hype and hoopla surrounding the Jets' revamped Wildcat offense, former offensive coordinator Tony Sparano failed to utilize Tebow effectively throughout the course of the season. Third-stringer Greg McElroy jumped ahead of Tebow on the depth chart as the former Alabama standout filled in for a struggling Mark Sanchez during a Week 14 win over the Arizona Cardinals.

It became evident that Tebow didn't factor into New York's long-term plans, fueling speculation that the polarizing quarterback would be released following the 2012 season.

Last offseason Tebow was acquired by the Jets in a trade from Denver; after he led the Broncos to an 2011 AFC West division title and Wildcard playoff win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Things didn't exactly pan out for Tebow in the Big Apple and his future as a quarterback in the NFL remains uncertain. Jets' head coach Rex Ryan applauded Tebow's work and determination during his short stay in New York and perhaps a change of scenery will help jumpstart his pro career.

"Unfortunately, things did not work out the way we all had hoped," admitted Ryan. "Tim is an extremely hard worker, evident by the shape he came back in this offseason. We wish him the best moving forward."
