With the draft around the corner, let’s examine where the Dolphins stand at every position, what they’ve done in the offseason and what prospects could interest them in the early rounds of the 2013 draft. This installment looks at the wide receiver position.

On the roster: Brian Hartline, Mike Wallace, Brandon Gibson, Brian Tyms, Davone Bess, Rishard Matthews, Armon Binns, Jeff Fuller

Offseason moves: Signed Mike Wallace (Pittsburgh); signed Brandon Gibson (St. Louis); re-signed UFA Brian Hartline; lost Marlon Moore (San Francisco)

Analysis: Getting a big-play receiver was the top priority of the offseason, and the Dolphins quickly accomplished that goal after landing Mike Wallace. That move, re-signing Brian Hartline and picking up Brandon Gibson from St. Louis have left the Dolphins in good shape at wide receiver. In fact, GM Jeff Ireland said in his pre-draft press conference the position now was one of the strengths of the team. With all the moves and needs in a few other areas, wide receiver now has moved to the background in terms of draft priorites.

The draft class: This crop lacks the elite prospects of recent years (guys like A.J. Green, Julio Jones or Justin Blackmon), but there is tremendous depth at the position and several potential starters to be had through the end of the second round.

The top prospect: Tavon Austin, West Virginia

Potential first-round picks: Tavon Austin; Cordarrelle Patterson, Tennessee; Keenan Allen, California; Robert Woods, USC

Overrated prospects: Tavon Austin

Under-the-radar prospects: Connor Vernon, Duke
