Coach Joe Philbin said Monday the depth chart was the product of everything he has seen and absorbed since the offseason work began on April 10."I talked to the team after practice, I informed them we were releasing a depth chart," Philbin said. "I also told them in no way, shape or form have decisions been finalized or made. I said to the team, the last time I checked we’re playing a game Sept. 9 in Houston. Today is Aug. 6. It’s a lot of time in between there.
"It’s a starting point. We’ve got to line up some way, Harvey (Greene) said I had to turn something in.”
The two most noteworthy items on the depth chart are David Garrard being listed first at quarterback, and Vontae Davis being listed on the second team at cornerback behind free agent acquisition Richard Marshall.
“He’s actually practiced well the last couple of days," Philbin said of Davis. "He made a couple of plays today again. He’s practicing well. He’s doing well. But there’s good competition there and that’s a good thing right now. Again, it’s early. I don’t think anybody should be concerned. The whole ballclub needs to show a lot of improvement and he’s no different than anybody else in that regard.”
As for the quarterback situation, Philbin called it "fluid." He also said that just because Garrard is listed on the first team Monday doesn't mean he necessarily will be the starter for Friday's preseason opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers..
“I went down to the quarterback room yesterday," Philbin said. "We talked and told them exactly what you see on that piece of paper. I went through it and told them about it. As I’ve said many times and I told them, I’m confident we’re going to get very, very good quarterback play out of that group. I believe we have talented players with good arm strength and good mobility with good leadership qualities. I couldn’t be happier with the four men that are in that room. I told them the same thing, this is a starting point, this is what we’re going to do. Right now, today, it’s a fluid situation. Things could change. But this is where we are today.”
