Rookie WR Michael Floyd must prove himself in camp, RB Beanie Wells will sit out on the PUP list and DT Dan Williams reported to camp at a nimble 314 pounds.
PLAYER NOTES
--WR
Michael Floyd
opened camp fourth on the overall depth chart at the position.
Larry Fitzgerald
,
Andre Roberts
and
Early Doucet
are ahead of him. They could open the season that way, although Floyd had a good first week of camp.
--G/C
Russ Hochstein
, a 12-year veteran, was signed mid-week. Hochstein has been a backup for much of his career. The Cardinals like the fact he can play center. Ryan Bartholomew, currently the backup, struggled in his first week of camp and is now bothered by a problem with his right knee.
--NT
Dan Williams
reported to camp at 314 pounds, he said, the lightest he's been since his senior year at
Tennessee
. Williams reported to training camp last year out of shape and didn't play well until the second half of the season. He heeded coaches' pleas to lose weight and get in condition. In fact, he said he could stand to gain five or so pounds.
--CB
Michael Adams
is hanging on to the starting nickel corner job. Adams is only 5-8, but he's competitive and an excellent tackler. He is also one of the Cardinals' best special teams players. Rookie
Jamell Fleming
is challenging.
--NT
David Carter
is also getting some work at defensive end. Carter backed up Dan Williams on the nose last year, but should be versatile enough to play both spots.
MEDICAL WATCH
--RB
Beanie Wells
(knee) is on PUP but expects to be activated about midway through training camp. Wells won't say the specific nature of the injury or detail what exactly was surgically repaired after the season.
--TE
Jeff King
(quadriceps) is on PUP but is expected to be activated some time during camp. King is running sprints and doing other rehabilitation work with an athletic trainer.
--RB Javarris James (abductor muscle) is going to miss a week or so. That injury is a blow to James, who has a shot at making the team. It also hurts the team because the numbers of healthy running backs are dwindling.
--C Ryan Bartholomew (knee) missed a practice last week but is expected to return soon. He's a backup.
--LB Zack Nash (ankle) has missed most of camp. A rookie free agent from Sacramento State, Nash played well enough OTAs to impress coaches. It's a fairly serious sprain so he could miss more time.
